25 Excuses You Must Drop to Be Happy

25 Excuses You Must Drop to Be Happy
by Sumitha
“It is better to offer no excuse than a bad one.”
―George Washington
Ever feel like something is holding you back from happiness?
You aren’t sure why, but every so often you find yourself saying “no” when you really want to say “yes.”  You turn down critical opportunities that you know you should be grabbing with both arms.  You pretend not to notice how your most cherished dreams are languishing on the sidelines.
Over the years, perhaps without your conscious knowledge, you have adopted some serious self-limiting beliefs that have secretly sabotaged your best efforts of personal growth.  If you pay close attention to your self-talk, these beliefs will reveal themselves in the form of excuses.  What you need to do is catch yourself in the act and replace these excuses with positive alternatives.
Here are 25 ideas to get you started:

1.  “It’s too late for me.”

As you grow up, you see people achieve things like getting a degree, building a career, making money, getting married, having kids and so on.  This sets the expectation in your mind that you too need to achieve certain things by a certain age.  And if you move at a slower pace than others, this limiting belief holds you back from going after what you really want right NOW.
Alternative:  “Now is a perfect time to start.” – Get over the baseless, default beliefs that certain things have to be done by a certain age.  The simple fact is that life is a series of events based on your own actions at any given moment.  You can have those events happen in your life in any order or sequence you like.  Age has nothing to do with it.

2.  “I don’t have time.”

Everyone gets the same 24 hours a day as you.  How is it that some people have found a way to make a difference during these same 24 hours?
Alternative:  “I need to properly manage my time.” – Become conscious of the way you use your time.  Get ruthless about cutting out time-wasting activities.  Schedule, prioritize and delegate as necessary.  Focus on the quality of the things you do, instead of the quantity.

3.  “I’m too plain and boring.”

Boring vs. interesting is a matter of choice and opinion.  Each of us is given a stage, a scene and a few props.  What makes a difference in the story of your life is how you choose to interpret and play your role.
Alternative:  “I’m in charge of writing my own story.” – Choose to stop being boring.  Figure out what ‘interesting’ means to you, and every time you feel that you are too boring, do one thing that will move you towards your definition of interesting.

4.  “I don’t deserve it.”

There are two versions of this.  The first makes you think that you are not worthy of something beautiful like love, respect, success and so on.  The second makes you feel that you are unfairly targeted by life’s difficulties.  Either way, this excuse ties you up and holds you down.
Alternative:  “I have plenty of good options in front of me.” – When you catch yourself wondering “why me?”, ask “why not me?”  Remember, in the grand scheme of things, you are just the same as anyone else; neither nature, nor God, displays favoritism or unfairness.  So learn to accept both the good and the bad that falls on your plate with grace.  (Read The Power of Now.)

5.  “I’m responsible for X,Y or Z, so taking care of myself in not a priority.”

This one is very common with parents, especially parents of little kids – I should know, I’m the queen of making this excuse!  But unless you take good care of yourself, unless you approach life on a full tank, you are not doing anyone any favors.
Alternative:  “I am a priority.” – Make time for yourself, to sleep, eat right, exercise, and replenish.  It’s not selfishness, it’s just an elevated level of caring.  When you are at your best, you can give the best to others.  (Note: If you are a parent, be sure to stop by afineparent.com where we discuss this topic in detail.)

6.  “Nobody understands me.”

Everyone has their own life to worry about; everybody is busy.  At the end of the day, nobody has the time or energy to figure anyone else out.  If it really matters to you that someone understands you better, simply communicate and make it easy for them to do so.
Alternative:  “I need to communicate clearly and act accordingly.” – Quit playing games.  Say what you need to say and do what you must.  (And realize that it is not necessary that everyone understands and agrees with you all the time.)

7.  “Nobody cares about what I care about.”

Can you imagine what would happen if everyone behind a good cause took on this attitude?  We’d never have any charitable organizations, fuel-efficient cars, health breakthroughs, peace efforts, literacy drives…!
Alternative:  “I care about this because it’s important.” – Take a stand.  If you care about something, even something personal, then become a champion of the cause and help others understand why you care so much.

8.  “I’m not smart enough.”

It starts off innocently, you try to do something and either get stuck or fail, and you think, “I’m so stupid.”  Over years of repeated use though, sadly, this statement becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy.
Alternative:  “It’s time to practice.” – When you catch yourself talking down to your own intelligence, stop.  Identify the one thing that makes you feel unintelligent and invest some time and energy into learning how to improve in this area.  Build up that confidence!  Start with something small, figure out how to perfect the next small step.  The more you learn, and the more setbacks you overcome, the more confident you will become.

9.  “My parents are responsible for the way I turned out.”

There ought to be an expiration date on this one.  Yes, your parents are responsible for helping you start the story of your life.  As you grow though, it is your responsibility to take things into your hands and write out the rest of your story with your own decisions and actions
Alternative:  “I am now in full control of my own life.” – Make a conscious choice to let your past make you better, not bitter.  You can’t go back and change how you were raised.  You can, however, start now and change how the rest of your life transpires.

10.  “I don’t have enough discipline and drive.”

Can you remember why you think this way?  Chances are, you forced yourself to do something that you weren’t excited about and then you failed.  Then, over a period of time you started to believe that you simply don’t have what it takes to stay disciplined.
Alternative:  “I just need to figure out how to motivate myself through this.” – Instead of forcing yourself to do something you don’t like, try to trick yourself, and automate as much of the required discipline as you possibly can by implementing habits that support your desired end result.  Research has consistently shown that willpower is a limited and exhaustible resource for everyone, not just you.  Those that are successful at staying disciplined are the ones who find ways to replace the brute force method with more creative, subtle routines and habits.

11.  “I’m not cut out for long-term relationships.”

This is an excuse a lot of people harbor.  Maybe you are scared of making yourself vulnerable or losing control over your life.  Maybe you’re worried about your ability to stay loyal and faithful.  Or maybe you’re paranoid about betrayal.  Here’s the thing, everybody has these fears to a certain extent.  So ask yourself, “Instead of facing these fears head on and overcoming them, am I turning them into excuses I’m doing nothing about?”
Alternative:  “I have relationship fears I need to face.” – Accept that you are scared and worried, realize that pretty much everyone else is as well, and then choose to stand strong and address your fears instead of running away from them.  Just like anything in life, even with love and relationships, some of us need to put in more practice and effort than others.  (Read 1,000 Little Things Happy, Successful People Do Differently.)

12.  “Now is not the right time.”

You are busy, right?  You just got that promotion and you don’t want to take your eyes off your career right now?  Or maybe you just got out of a bad relationship?  Love, and life in general, has a way of happening when it happens – it does not check with you first to see if it’s convenient or if you are ready for a new opportunity.  Take it or lose it.
Alternative:  “Now is as good as it gets.” – Imagine you are old… really old, and getting ready to pass on.  Will you be OK with the fact that you passed on the opportunities you have right now.  Remember, any new opportunity that makes you grow and stretch yourself will never feel completely comfortable at first, so it will never feel like the right time to act.

13.  “It’s too much work.”

Love, fulfilled dreams and small victories – they are all such beautiful things that add so much joy, happiness and vibrancy to our lives.  Why should these things be easy?  Why should they just fall into your lap?  Why should you expect easy returns without any hard work?
Alternative:  “I’m ready to DO the work.” – Remember, anything worth having is worth working hard for.  Put in the effort and you will reap the rewards over the long-term.

14.  “What if this person turns out like <someone who has hurt me before>?”

No two people are exactly alike.  Besides, you’ve changed and grown since your last relationship.  Just because someone you once knew was toxic, doesn’t mean someone you just met is too.
Alternative:  “I will not judge someone based on the behavior of someone else.” – Be aware and conscious, but keep an open mind.  If you catch yourself punishing people in your present for the things people in your past did or didn’t do, stop yourself.  If you catch your new partner or friend repeating the same mistakes, gently steer them in the right direction.  Stay present, and let your best judgment of the current reality guide you.

15.  “I’m doing <something I hate> so I don’t hurt <someone I care about>.”

Relationships are meant to empower you, not victimize you.  Don’t use them as an excuse to keep doing something that continuously makes you suffer (or keeps you from doing something that you really should be doing).
Alternative:  “It’s time to apologize, come clean and negotiate.” – Remember, with this excuse you are actually cheapening your relationship and dishonoring your loved one.  If you really don’t like doing something, find a way to work it out.  If you absolutely can’t, then figure out if this relationship is right for you.  Long-term suffering and victimhood are never part of a healthy relationship.

16.  “My <partner/friend/family member> always brings out the worst in me.”

Seriously?  You are going to dump all the blame on someone else?  Here’s a reality check:  You and only you are the owner of your attitude and actions.  Don’t use your relationships as an excuse to be weak or negative.
Alternative:  “I am bringing out the worst in me.” – Own up to it; your behavior is your responsibility.  No one can bring out the worst in you unless you let them.  Choose differently.

17.  “I’m so unlucky.”

Emerson said it aptly: “Shallow men believe in luck.  Strong men believe in cause and effect.”  Which one would you rather be, shallow or strong?
Alternative:  “I am going to create my own luck.” – Choose to be the creator of your destiny.  Yes, misfortunes happen, but don’t use it as an excuse to not try something new, or to wither in the face of a failure.  Luck is something that’s created over time based on action and dedication.  So get up and get going, regardless of how lady luck seems to be treating you in the short-term.

18.  “I’m just waiting for my big break” or “I’m still not ready.”

These are two excuses that cover the same basic issues – fear of starting, lethargy of putting things in motion and the trepidation of striking out.  Sure, big breaks help, but don’t count on them; if you do, you might wait forever.  Planning and learning is certainly important, but if the plans and knowledge stay locked up in your head forever, it will do no one any good.
Alternative:  “I’m as ready now as I’ll every be.” – Just start; everything else will fall in place.  Besides, getting started is a great way to be at the right place at the right time, so you can catch that big break.  Waiting around doesn’t give you the input necessary to figure out what works and what doesn’t.  You have to begin and then build upon each step you take.  (Read The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People.)

19.  “Everything has already been done… I’ll never be an original, so why even try.”

True, there’s almost nothing you can do that hasn’t already been done before, with a few rare exceptions.  What you can do, however, is to take something unoriginal and breathe your uniqueness and individuality into it, thereby creating something brand new.  Are you willing to do that?
Alternative:  “Through my unique lens, I can add tremendous value.” – Just choose to be yourself and give things your best shot; the rest will take care of itself.  This was actually one of the biggest excuses holding me back when I wanted to start afineparent.com to chronicle my struggles to become a better parent.  There are so many parenting sites out there already; do we really need another one?  But I am into personal development, and I noticed that there aren’t any sites specifically focusing on personal development for parents.  It’s something I would have loved to read, so I decided to go for it.  Well, guess what?  The site is not even up yet and over 500 parents have already signed up!  Just goes to show that you have to pick something that matters to you and put yourself into it, and it will eventually work out.

20.  “I’m a failure.”

If someone claims to have never failed, then he or she is either the luckiest person on earth or has settled on a safe, risk-free life that allows them to do nothing exciting or productive at all.  And since no one can be lucky all the time, the odds are high that it is the latter.  Would you like to be that person who gave up on their life?
Alternative:  “I’m prepared to fail forward and learn as I go.” – Failure is OK.  Face it; it’s just another fear.  You’ve already overcome this fear once by getting started.  Will you let a few setbacks take that away from you?  Yes, it’s scary to start over from time to time, but that’s what living is all about – trial and error, change and growth.

21.  “I’m too scared.”

Well, congratulations!  You are a perfectly normal human being.  Being scared is a fact of life.  Even the bravest people in the world are scared.  What separates the brave ones from the wimps is that they don’t let their fears turn into excuses.
Alternative:  “This fear I’m feeling means I’m human.” – Embrace the fact that as long as you choose to live a full life, fear will be a constant companion who keeps you safe from making dangerous mistakes.  You just have to let it know that you will not obsess over the little warnings it sends.  Instead, you will evaluate a situation and take calculated risks as you step forward.

22.  “I’ll never be able to get it perfect, so why try?”

There’s something to be said for perfection – of exquisitely detailed, thorough work.  That said, if perfection is keeping you from finishing, or even starting something, it’s time to give it some serious thought.  Too much of a good thing can indeed be bad for you.
Alternative:  “Perfect is the enemy of good.” – Shift the limelight of your perfectionist attitude from the end product to the process.  Get started and set a constraint on when you will put your work out there for the world to see.  Keep your perfectionist tendencies laser-focused on doing the right work, instead of doing all the work perfectly right.

23.  “I’ll never be as good as <someone else>, so why bother?”

How do you know that?  Seriously, no matter how good the <someone else> is, unless you try, how will you know for sure?  And why are you comparing your results to someone else’s?  Why not focus on beating your own best records?
Alternative:  “I’m only in competition with myself.” – Quit comparing yourself to others.  The only comparison that makes any sense is whether you are better today than you were yesterday; everything else is a waste of thought.  (Read Awaken the Giant Within.)

24.  “My <parents/spouse/kids> will not support me.”

If you don’t have the support of those closest to you, you should thank your lucky stars because you have been given the unique opportunity to test your ideas out (and possibly fail) safely with a smaller audience that you can trust.  Will you make the best of this opportunity, or will you use it as an excuse to justify your fears?
Alternative:  “How can I win them over?” – Take it as a personal challenge.  What can you do to convince your <parents/spouse/kids>?  Listen to every word of opposition, learn, refine and evolve.  Choose to make the most of this opportunity.

25.  “I can’t.”

In the words of Henry Ford, “Whether you think you can, or you think you can’t, you’re right.”  And this is a good thing too.  It means you are in control.
Alternative:  “I can and I am, starting now.” – Remember that it’s all in the mind.  If Helen Keller, Mahatma Gandhi, Beethoven, Thomas Edison, Mother Teresa, Michael Phelps and countless others through the course of history could do it, why can’t you?  The answer is:  You can if you are willing to put forth the time and effort to grow beyond the barriers that stand in front of you.

What Now?

So, you read the whole list, probably nodding all the way through and maybe even smacking your forehead a few times.  What now?
You already know that the best way to make progress is to start – to take a small step right now.  So, go ahead and pick one excuse that is holding you back and commit to dropping it, starting from… Right. Freaking. Now.
So which excuse above do you struggle with the most?  Which excuse did you pick?  No, seriously, which one?  Leave a comment below and share your insights.

20 Bad Habits Holding Good People Back

post written by: Marc Chernoff

20 Bad Habits Holding Good People Back

A change in bad habits leads to a good change in life…

Here are twenty bad habits many of us repeatedly struggle with:
  1. Expecting life to be easy. – Nothing starts easy; everything begins at some level of difficulty.  Even waking up in the morning sometimes requires notable effort.  But one beautiful thing about life is the fact that the most difficult challenges are often the most rewarding and satisfying.
  2. Overlooking your true path and purpose. – What really matters in life is not what we buy, but what we build; not what we have, but what we share with the world; not our capability but our character; and not our success but our true significance.  Live a life that makes you proud – one that matters and makes a difference.  Live a life filled with passion and love.  Read A New Earth: Awakening to Your Life’s Purpose.
  3. Chasing after those who don’t want to be caught. – Do not chase people.  Be you, do your own thing and work hard on your passions.  The right people who belong in your life will eventually come to you, and stay.
  4. Not asking for help when you know you need it. – No matter how far you’ve gone down the wrong road, you can always turn back.  Be STRONG enough to stand alone, SMART enough to know when you need help, and BRAVE enough to ask for it.
  5. Letting one dark cloud cover the entire sky. – Take a deep breath.  It’s just a bad moment, or a bad day, not a bad life.  Everyone has troubles.  Everyone makes mistakes.  The secret of happiness is to count your blessings while others are adding up their troubles.
  6. Holding on to things you need to let go of. – Letting go doesn’t mean giving up, but rather accepting that there are things in life that should not be.  Sometimes letting go is what makes us stronger, happier and more successful in the long run.
  7. Spending time with people who make you unhappy. – People can be cruel, and sometimes they will be.  People can hurt you and break your heart, and sometimes they will.  But only YOU can allow them to continuously hurt you.  Value yourself enough to choose to spend time with people who treat you the way you treat them.  Know your worth.  Know when you have had enough.  And move on from the people who keep chipping away at your happiness.
  8. Not making time for those who matter most. – When we take things for granted, these things eventually get taken away.  Too often we don’t realize what we have until it’s gone.  Too often we are too stubborn to say, “I’m sorry, I was wrong.”  Too often it seems we hurt the ones closest to us by letting insignificant issues tear us apart.  Appreciate what you have, who loves you and who cares for you.  You’ll never know how much they mean to you until the day they are no longer beside you.
  9. Denying personal responsibility. – You’re getting almost everything you’re getting right now based on the decisions you have made; and you will continue to receive the same things until you choose differently.  You always have some element of control.  There are always other options.  The choices might not be easy, but they are available.  You will not get a different result until you exercise a choice that forces you to grow by habit, by action, and by change.
  10. Letting everyone else make decisions for you. – Never allow someone or something that adds very little to your life, control so much of it.  You’ve got to stop caring about what everyone else wants for you, and start actually living for yourself.  Let go of the people and things that continuously hold you back and no longer serve you, because you only get one shot at life.
  11. Giving up who YOU are. – Remove yourself from any situation that requires you to give up any one of these three things:  1) Who you are.  2)  What you stand for.  3)  The goals you aspire to achieve.  Read Quitter.
  12. Quitting as soon as things get slightly difficult. – An arrow can only be shot by pulling it backward; and such is life.  When life is pulling you back with difficulties, it means it’s going to eventually launch you forward in a positive direction.  So keep focusing, and keep aiming!
  13. Doing too much and pushing too hard, without pausing. – Plenty of people miss their share of happiness, not because they never find it, but because they never stop long enough to enjoy it.  Sometimes we are so focused on what we want that we miss the things we need most.
  14. Discrediting yourself for everything you aren’t. – STOP discrediting yourself for everything you aren’t.  START giving yourself credit for everything that you are.
  15. Running from current problems and fears. – Trust me, if everyone threw their problems in a pile for you to see, you would grab yours back.  Tackle your problems and fears swiftly, don’t run away from them.  The best solution is to face them head on no matter how powerful they may seem.  Either you own your problems and fears, or they will ultimately own you.
  16. Constantly mulling over past hardships. – You’ll never see the great things ahead of you if you keep looking at the bad things behind you.  To reach up for the new, you must let go of the old.  You are exactly where you need to be to reach your goals.  Everything you’ve been through was preparation for where you are right now and where you can be tomorrow.
  17. Denying your mistakes. – Remember that most honorable people of all are not those who never make mistakes, but those who admit to them when they do.  And then go on to do their best to make the wrong things right.
  18. Expecting your significant other to be perfect. – Remember that you will never find a PERFECT partner to love you in the exact way you had envisioned, only a person who is willing to love you with all that they are.  Someone who will accept you for who you can and cannot be.  And although they will never be PERFECT, finding a partner like this is even BETTER.  Read The Mastery of Love.
  19. Focusing on the negative. – Positive thinking isn’t about expecting the best thing to happen every time, it’s about accepting that whatever happens is good for this moment, and then making the best of it.  So stay positive, and hold on to what’s truly important.  Let your worries go.  No matter how you look at it, some outcomes just don’t make sense right away.  Choosing to carry on with your goals through this uncertainty is what matters.
  20. Never allowing things to be good enough. – We are human.  We are not perfect.  We are alive.  We try things.  We make mistakes.  We stumble.  We fall.  We get hurt.  We rise again.  We try again.  We keep learning.  We keep growing.  And we are thankful for this priceless opportunity called life.

9 Free Ways to Become Wealthy

post written by: Marc Chernoff

9 Free Ways to Become Wealthy The real measure of your wealth is how much you’d be worth if you lost all your money.  Start building real wealth today by doing the following:
  1. Realize that the small things are really the big things. – We are always looking for something better that we sometimes fail to realize that we already have the best we could hope for.  When you get something small, you want more.  When you get more, you desire even more.  But when you lose everything, you realize the small things were really the big things.  Read The Last Lecture.
  2. Cherish your relationships. – Sometimes people are beautiful, not in looks, not in what they say, just in who they are and what they do.  Remember, you will never fully appreciate all of the things someone does for you until you find yourself doing the same things for yourself.  So be grateful for the people who make your life a little brighter.  They are the charming gardeners who help your soul blossom.
  3. Be okay with the fact that you can’t control everything. – When you’re younger, you exhaust yourself trying to take charge of everything in your life, other people, and all situations.  Then one day it dawns on you that you will never gain control until you lose the need to have it – until you can simply let it be okay, to not be perfectly okay.  When you’re wearing yourself ragged trying to juggle the outcome of everything happening around you, it’s time to stop, take a breath, and remind yourself that the only things you can truly control, are what choices you will make, and how much control you will give to the fear that you’re feeling.
  4. Work through your failures. – Success is not a skill; it is a persistent attitude.  The difference in winning and losing is, most often, the simple act of not quitting.  Before you quit, think of the reason why you held on so long, and all the progress you have made.  The reason so many people give up too early is because they tend to look at how far they still have to go, instead of how far they have come.  Read The Success Principles.
  5. Don’t let your fears make your decisions anymore. – Have faith that the universe has a plan for you, and it’s all being revealed in the right timeframe.  Something you will eventually learn through all your ups and downs is that there are really no wrong decisions in life, just choices that will take your life down a totally different path.  So take chances, follow your intuition, and allow yourself more moments of awe, wonder, inspiration and grace.
  6. Stand up for yourself. – Don’t let the people who do so little for you, control so much of your feelings and emotions.  Never cry for those who don’t know the value of your tears.  Stand your ground.  It is better to let them walk away from you than all over you.
  7. Make up your mind to be happy. – Nobody can take away your pain, so don’t let anyone take away your happiness.  If you want to be sad, no one in the world can make you happy.  But if you make up your mind to be happy, no one and nothing on earth can take that happiness from you.
  8. Let go of resentment. – You will only begin to heal and grow when you let go of the past, forgive those who have wronged you, and learn for forgive yourself for your mistakes.  So every morning as you make your bed, think positively, and smooth out the wrinkles of negativity left from yesterday’s challenges, tuck the corners of your doubts away, and fluff your belief that every day is a perfect new beginning.  Read Radical Forgiveness.
  9. Focus on the positive. – With everything that has happened to you, you can either feel sorry for yourself or treat what has happened as a gift.  Everything is either an opportunity to grow or an obstacle to keep you from growing.  You get to choose.  No matter how far you have traveled or how many failures you have encountered, hope and positivity can still meet you anywhere.
And I leave you with a simple question:  What do you have that money can’t buy?

8 Ways to Grow Your Happiness by Letting Go

post written by: Marc Chernoff

8 Ways to Grow Your Happiness by Letting Go
Happiness in all walks of life is often more about stopping than starting.  More about subtracting than adding.  More about letting go than holding on.
Consider, for example, what happens when you stop, subtract or let go of…

1.  Criticizing everyone and everything.

Life isn’t perfect.  People make mistakes.  Let go of unfair expectations.  Stop criticizing yourself and others for being human.  If you feel like everyone is judging you all the time, realize that human beings often feel this way when they are too busy judging themselves.
It’s far easier to be critical than correct, just as it’s easier to see why something is lacking rather than why it is good.  If you meet someone for the first time and you decide, “This is a person I don’t like,” you can basically take every one of their characteristics and find the obvious flaw.  What’s hard to do is describe what you like about them, despite their incompatibility with your ideals.
Everyone is unique: not better, not worse, just unique in their own way.  Appreciate the differences instead of criticizing the shortcomings and you’ll see people – and yourself – in a far better light.

2.  Believing that you have all the answers.

Criticizing has a big brother: the know-it-all-syndrome.  The older you grow, the higher you rise in your chosen field, and the more you achieve, the more likely you are to think you know it all.  When you catch yourself thinking and speaking with intense finality and little tolerance for new ideas, stop yourself and take a deep breath.  If you do not, you will alienate the world around you and become more and more disconnected from reality with each passing day.  Few things are sadder and leave a person unhappier.
Remember, it isn’t someone who proves you wrong that hurts you; it is choosing to continue your self-deception and ignorance that eventually conquers you entirely.
The measure of your intelligence and success in life will be in direct proportion to your ability to change your mind and let it expand.  If someone is able to show you that what you think or do is not right, thank them and happily adjust.  Seek the truth.  Never stop learning.

3.  Trying to control everything.

Craving control leads to anger and unhappiness.  Life is to be lived, not controlled.  Powerful, positive change will occur in your life when you decide to take control of yourself instead of craving control over everyone and everything else.
Imagine that you’re driving in your car and you get stuck in rush hour traffic.  The traffic situation is out of your control and simply requires your patience.  However, this doesn’t stop you from switching lanes, trying to cut in front of other cars, or even leaving the road you’re on to try alternate routes – all desperate efforts to gain control.  Sadly, these efforts just lead to further stress and unhappiness when they are unsuccessful – when control is again obstructed.
Quite simply, the reason you are often miserable and stressed is because of an unhealthy attachment to certain things you have no control over.  So let go.  Release the tension and stress.  Realize you haven’t lost anything; you were never in control of the uncontrollable to begin with.  (Read The Power of Now.)

4.  Dwelling on what used to be.

When something negative happens, view this circumstance as a chance to learn something you didn’t know.  Don’t wish it never happened.  Don’t try to step back in time.  Take the lessons learned and step forward.  You have to tell yourself, “It’s OK. You’re doing OK.”  You need to know that it’s better to cross new lines and suffer the consequences of a lesson learned from time to time, than to just stare at the lines for the rest of your life and always wonder.
The past is valuable.  It provides a solid foundation for everything you’re doing now.  Learn from it – the mistakes and the successes – and then let it go.  This process might seem easier said than done, but it depends on your focus.  The past is just training; it doesn’t define you in this moment.  Think about what went wrong, but only in terms of how you will help you make things right.
The bottom line is that if nothing ever changed – if no chances were ever taken and no mistakes were ever made – there would be no sunrise the next morning.  Most of us are comfortable where we are even though the whole universe is constantly changing around us.  Learning to accept this change is vital to our happiness and general self-improvement.  Because only when we let go of what used to be, do we grow and begin to see a world we never knew was possible.

5.  Wanting everything you don’t have.

Life is NOT short if you spend every waking moment appreciating it.  It’s just that by the time most of us catch up to appreciating what we have, we’ve already squandered our time and left life at least halfway behind us.
The key is being thankful for what you have NOW.
No, not all the puzzle pieces of life will seem to fit together at first, but in time you’ll realize they do, perfectly.  So thank the situations that didn’t work out for you, because they just made room for the situations that will.  And thank the people who walked away from you, because they just made room for the ones who won’t.
No matter how good or bad you think you have it, wake up each day thankful for your life.  Someone somewhere else is desperately fighting for theirs.  Instead of thinking about what you’re missing, think about what you have that everyone else is missing.  Think of what a precious privilege it is to be alive in your own shoes – to breathe a fresh breath, to think another thought, to enjoy a new moment, to have options – then go out and make the day count.

6.  Whining and doing nothing about it.

Complaining does not work as a strategy.  Those who complain the most, accomplish the least positive results.  When you spend time fretting and complaining, you’re simply using your imagination to create things you don’t want.
Don’t talk about what’s wrong.  Harping on your problems makes you feel worse, not better.  Unless you want to complain about it forever, eventually you’ll have to DO something.  If you took a fraction of the energy you put into complaining and applied it to solving your problem, you’d likely be stunned by how well things can work out.  Start talking about how you’ll improve things, even if the conversation is only with yourself, and then focus on the next positive step.  Refocus your energy into making your situation better.  (Read The Power of Habit.)

7.  Fearing everything for any reason at all.

Sometimes we’re afraid we’ll fail.  Sometimes we’re subconsciously afraid we’ll succeed, because then we’d have to deal with all the disruption (growth) and change that follows success.  And other times it’s our fear of rejection or simply our fear of looking like a fool.  So it’s easier to hesitate, to wait for the perfect moment, to decide we need to think a bit longer or do some more research or explore a few more unnecessary alternatives.
Meanwhile days, weeks, months, and even years of our precious lives pass us by.  And so do our dreams.
The best way I’ve found to let go of fear is to stare it down.  Connect to your fear, feel it in your body, realize it and steadily address it.  Greet it by name if you have to: “Welcome, fear.”  And then take action!  Whatever you’ve been planning, whatever you’ve imagined, whatever you’ve dreamed of, don’t wait another minute.  Get started!  Take the first step.  Do something.  Do anything.  Learn as you go and watch as your fears slowly subside.

8.  Spending time with people who drain you.

It’s not always where you are in life, but who you have by your side that matters most.  Some people drain you and others provide soul food.  Don’t jeopardize your dignity and self-respect by trying to make someone accept, love and appreciate you when they have proven that they are incapable of doing so.
When you leave the wrong people behind, the right things start happening.  What would happen if you surrounded yourself with people who made you better?  What would happen if you started spending time with the RIGHT people?
Think about it.

Your turn…

The Only Way You Can Change The World

post written by: Marc Chernoff

You Can Change The World

An Epiphany

Imagine for a moment that the year is 2000 B.C. and you’re a fisherman living along the coast of what is now Southern Europe.  Like any other morning, you’re fishing when suddenly a powerful burst of energy enters your body.  It creates a tingling sensation in your fingertips, a flutter in your heart and warmth in your belly.  You know it’s not anxiety or a heart attack because it feels comforting and fulfilling.
You put your fishing pole down and sit at the water’s edge.  You reach down and splash a handful of cool water up onto your face.  It is here, in this quiet moment, that you have an epiphany.  And while you are unable to explain how or why this epiphany is coming to you now – you haven’t done anything out of the ordinary to receive it – its message is crystal clear:
The Earth is not flat.  The Earth is a sphere.  You can visualize it revolving around the sun in a predictable orbital pattern. These visualizations also reveal that the Earth is part of a solar system of eight planets separate from other stars in the night’s sky and that these other stars follow similar predictable patterns of movement.  There is a whole uncharted universe out there that nobody else is aware of.
Once the magnitude of your epiphany settles in your mind, you begin to sweat from nervousness.  Because while the small village you live in is peaceful, there is little tolerance for outlandish ideas and theories like the ones that just rattled your brain.  If you were to tell others about them, the nobles and town leaders might interpret it as a direct threat to the religious and cultural stability of the community, and the rest of the villagers would likely think you’re insane.  You could be exiled.
You decide that you must handle your business as usual and leave the futuristic visions and epiphanies to the witch doctors and nomads who dwell in the forests on the outskirts of civilization.  These people have already decided that the world they grew up in doesn’t hold the answers they are looking for.  They are the ones who should convey these outlandish ideas to the world.  Because they have nothing to lose.  At least not as much as you do.
So you don’t tell a soul about your epiphany.  Days roll into weeks.  Weeks roll into months.  And you imagine, each day, that you are better off for having kept it a secret.  But you are also aware that keeping this secret is eating away at you from the inside out.  You have distanced yourself from people and have been sleeping less and less.  Your mind won’t stop stirring.

Words of Wisdom

One night, after hours of stirring, you finally fall asleep and begin to dream.  You dream that you’re sitting at round table in a dimly lit room.  There is a man sitting across the table from you.  You can barely make out his face, but you can see his hair is peppered with silver and his skin is worn.  He seems old and wise.  And it feels like he can see right through to your soul.  But you also feel comforted because there is nothing to hide from him.  He already knows what you know.
“Do you know why you’re sitting here with me?” he asks in a low, soothing voice.
“I don’t know,” you reply.  “I guess I’m here because I have no one else I can talk to.”
He smiles and says, “You are here because you have something to say.  Something you know that is of immense importance – something that will change the world when you finally say it.  But you are afraid to say it because you don’t think people are ready to hear it.”
You sit in silence with him for a moment.  Just staring into his eyes.  You feel an energy emanating from his heart and gently soothing yours.  Easing it of tension.  Letting it know that it can beat loudly and proudly at any pace it wants to without concern.  Because it’s safe here – a sanctuary devoid of judgment.  And all of the fear inside you slowly subsides.
You take a deep breath and say, “I am here because I had an epiphany in which I saw, clearly, that the earth is not flat.  It is a sphere that revolves around the sun as part of an eight planet solar system.  And there are other stars out there too, perhaps in other solar systems in what is likely a vast, uncharted universe.”
You pause for a moment, take two more deep breaths and continue, “I don’t know where this epiphany came from or why it came to me when it did.  But I’m certain that it’s accurate.  And I’m certain, also, that the people of this world aren’t ready for it.  I have already been punished for having this epiphany – for simply knowing what I know.  And I don’t want to be punished once more for conveying what I know to others.”
He smiles again. And you feel, as he smiles, more comforted than you have since before you had your epiphany.  “In all walks of life, you will never know when the world is ready,” he says. “You will only know when you are ready.  And you will know when you are simply because you will take action and do something about it.  And after you do something, you will know when there is more to do, because you will do more.”
His words of wisdom are so clear, so simple.  But the real world, you recall, is far more twisted and convoluted.  In the real world, there are cultures and customs that have been around for generations that must be dealt with.
“The most important thing to remember,” he continues, “is that while it may feel like you are at the mercy of the world, you are not.  Because the world is merely a reflection of what’s inside you – your thoughts.  So what feels like an entire world that isn’t ready, isn’t really a world at all.  It’s just you.  And when you change, you will notice that the world outside has changed too.”

Changed

Your eyes slowly open.  You sit up in bed and silently meditate over your dream.  After a few moments, you stand up and walk out the front door of your cabin to get some fresh air.  And as you stand there watching the sun rise over the village, you notice something is different.  The entire village seems brighter and more alive than you remember.  Has the village changed?  Have the people changed?  Or is it just you?  You aren’t sure.
What you are sure of is that you have fish to catch today.  And that you have something important to say.  And while you don’t know yet how you will say it, you are gradually growing more and more confident that you will know soon.  And by the time you realize you know, you will have already begun to say what you need to say.
And the world around you will have already begun to change.
Because you have changed.

Some Things You Need To Know

One Thing You Need To Know
I know you’re reading this.  And I want you to know I’m writing this for you.  Others will be confused.  They will think I’m writing this for them.  But I’m not.
This one’s for you.
I want you to know that life is not easy.  Every day is an unpredictable challenge.  Some days it can be difficult to simply get out of bed in the morning.  To face reality and put on that smile.  But I want you to know, your smile has kept me going on more days than I can count.  Never forget that, even through the toughest times, you are incredible.  You really are.
So smile more often.  You have so many reasons to.  Time and again, my reason is you.
You won’t always be perfect.  Neither will I.  Because nobody is perfect, and nobody deserves to be perfect.  Nobody has it easy, everybody has issues.  You will never know exactly what I’m going through.  And I will never know exactly what you’re going through.  We are all fighting our own unique war.
But we are fighting through it simultaneously, together.
Whenever somebody discredits you, and tells you that you can’t do something, keep in mind that they are speaking from within the boundaries of their own limitations.  Ignore them.  Don’t give in.  In this crazy world that’s trying to make you like everyone else, find the courage to keep being your awesome self.  And when they laugh at you for being different, laugh back at them for being the same.
Remember, our courage doesn’t always roar aloud.  Sometimes it’s the quiet voice at the end of the day whispering, “I will try again tomorrow.”  So stand strong.  Things turn out best for people who make the best out of the way things turn out.
And I am committed to making the best of it along with you.

12. Even better is to have your own experience with that product/service and share it with your visitors.
13. Only a small number of your visitors are likely to follow your advice and buy and this also provided that you've done an honest and good job promoting it.
14. You should take a look from time to time in the stats in your account at the network company to see how you perform. The good thing is that you don't necessarily have to deal with the merchants. So what are the risks?   With any new startup company you are at risk if the company doesn’t make it. Plain and simple. If you focus on promoting only one product, service, affiliate program or business opportunity and it doesn’t sell or the company goes down – you have nothing! But when you create multiple streams of income – if one of the streams dries up – it’s a bummer but not catastrophic.
